I-73 NCDOT Design Build, Guilford County, NC

Blythe Development was a Joint Venture Partner with Flatiron Constructors performing as the Design-Build constructors on this $196 million new location freeway project north of the Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTI). This 9.4 mile, four-lane divided highway was designated as future I-73 and began at the Joseph M. Bryan Boulevard / Airport Parkway interchange in Greensboro, NC, and ended south of US 220 near the Haw River.

An early works package was approved to begin clearing and grubbing, erosion control, and excavation. Initial efforts also included building a taxiway bridge for PTI that crossed over I-73 and will be used as access for multiple manufacturing facilities on the opposite side of I-73 from the airport. At the northern end, I-73 was connected to U.S. 220, aiding the commutes of drivers from Rockingham County and other areas north of Greensboro and PTI.

The JV constructed 14 bridges in 30 months requiring H-Pile and drilled shaft/micropile foundations, 4.5 million CY of earthwork, storm drainage and culvert construction, 300,000 tons of asphalt paving, noise wall design and construction, ITS installations, and in-contract water/sewer design and construction. Tasks also included coordination with multiple parties including the City of Greensboro and the PTI.
