I-40 over the Yadkin River, Davie & Forsyth Counties

Blythe Development Co was a partner in a fully integrated joint venture with Flatiron Constructors on this $82M design-build project that added travel lanes to a 3.3-mile section of I-40 in Davie and Forsyth counties, North Carolina. This project replaced and widened the bridge crossing the Yadkin River. This structure was over 1100 feet long and 122 feet wide. The facility was an existing four-lane divided route that was increased to six lanes with a median barrier wall. A new bridge and two interchange improvements were also constructed.

The scope of work included;

  • Widening I-40 from four to six lanes with a median barrier wall, staged removal
  • Construction of a multi-span pre-cast concrete girder-concrete deck bridge over the Yadkin River
  • Piling and drilled shaft foundations, construction of a pedestrian bridge over I-40 to replace existing failed structure
  • Extension of a pedestrian box culvert, drainage system construction, and noise wall design and construction

Challenges included daily traffic management and maintenance, erosion control in areas with limited access points, and managing the bridge construction schedule with inconsistent and extreme changes in the river’s water level.
